2014 APE Tall Tales
August 8 - 10
2014 BSA Airfest
The Boy Scouts had their Airfest event between Aug 8-10, and this year, Ham radio was a big part in it. The location was Lewis University and the attached Airport. We ran under the BSA’s call of K2BSA/9. There were about 3,500 scouts camped out over the weekend and they put us right in the middle of all the action. There were two different locations set up, each with two radios. The original plan was to have digital and voice at each location, but technical issues compounded and mine ended up being the only digital station.
The digital operators ended up being:
K9DWR and N9HSH
N9HSH had actually never operated PSK before, so I was happy to help him get some experience with it. He really enjoyed it.
The PSK rig was a TS-440SAT + Signalink with Fldigi. I was attached to the 40m dipole, and tuned it to 15m (and a couple 20m contacts). Contacts were split pretty evenly between 15m and 40m.
Halfway through the APE, I had to swap laptops (I brought two) due to some unknown issue, so was able to live up to the BSA motto of “Be Prepared.” There was no shortage of opportunity to test this out.
For the digital station for the APE itself, we used aluminum military masts to raise a 40m dipole about 40ft in the air. The dome in the background is the Chicago area NWS radar for KLOT.
I was actually surprised at the number of Europe and South American stations that we got early on. There was even a Japan contact to round things out. Most of those were on 15m, the majority of the USA contacts were on 40m.

WB5CXC/K5KRB/W5WF - 2014 APE Expedition
On August 8, 2014 Ken (K5KRB), Larry (WB5CXC), and Charles (W5WF) traveled from Montgomery County Texas to Grand Bayou Resort in Coushatta, Louisiana, where we had three cabins next to each other that overlooked Grand Bayou Reservoir.
Upon arrival we began setting up two stations. One station was used for 20 meter operation and the other station was used for 15 meter.
WB5CXC’s station consisted of a Yaesu FT 857D with a MFJ manual tuner. Larry also used a Signalink USB interface. The antenna was a 15 meter ladder line J pole antenna.
Larry’s Go Box:
W5WF’s station consisted of an ICom 7000 with a 31 ft. end fed antenna using a Signalink USB interface. The software was Ham Radio Deluxe on a MacBook Pro running Windows 7.
Charlie’s Go Box
We knew this was going to be a great APE when our first contact was with Ireland. We made a total of 86 contacts, 21 of them were with 070 Club members. Two 070 Club members W3HF and W2DEN contacted all three of us.

2014 KC9UR Pontoon Portable APE Tall Tale For 2014
Stan (W9SMR/9) and I (Bob - KC9UR) wanted to build on the success of our 2013 Pontoon Portable APE. New for this year were two directional HF antennas (to hopefully give us stronger signals), a kayak-mounted vertical for 40M - 15M omni-directional coverage, and a 6M antenna to hopefully give out a few contacts for those PODXSers seeking a "6 on 6" endorsement.
Our APE was scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug 19 - 20, so we set up the antennas and equipment on Monday. It took most of the day to get things set up, so we were only able to make a couple of contacts in the evening to check things out. On Tuesday morning we started on 30M and 20M then moved up to 17M and 15M as the day went on and propagation allowed. We called CQ on 6M each hour, but saw nary a trace either day.
Bob (KC9UR - left) and Stan (W9SMR/9) inside the pontoon boat shack. The dark plastic shields the sun from the laptops and to helps protect the equipment in case of rain.
Around 4:30 pm, a classic Indiana summer "thunder boomer" moved through the area, so we had to high-tail it for shelter. It was three hours before we could get back on the air. After the storm we worked the resulting pile-up on 40M and then were chased off the boat again around 11:00 pm by nearby lightning. The forced shut-downs were during "prime time" when hams were getting home from work and turning on their radios. I'm sure the "weather breaks" contributed to our reduced total contact count compared to last year. One of our "lessons-learned" is to start next year's APE in the evening after antenna set-up, giving us two full evenings and days, weather permitting. Wednesday started slow and continued slow, but steady, throughout the day. At the request/encouragement of some 070 members, we tried 12M often, but without seeing a trace - propagation left a lot to be desired. Our offer of a custom certificate for working us on three bands generated quite a bit of enthusiasm that added to the fun.

Our final QSO count was 164 (108 CONUS and 56 OCONUS), working 31 states and 22 countries. The rarest DX consisted of Namibia (V51WF) and Australia (VK4EJ). Kudos go to the 11 certificate winners, including K4LEA (40/30/20M), K8TOM (40/30/20/17M), KE4JB (40/30/20M), KK4CPS (40/30/20M), KU8Q (20/17/15M), N5SLY (20/17/15M), N7WE (40/30/20/17), W2DEN (30/20/17/15M), W3GXV (40/30/20M), W3WMU (40/30/20M) and WA4MIT (40/30/20M). Special recognition goes to three certificate winners who worked us on 4 bands (K8TOM, N7WE, and W2DEN)! Two of the winners were repeats from last year (K8TOM and W3WMU) - great job!! Also, honorable mention goes to the following who worked us on 2 bands: DL2OCE (17/15M), KG9DW (40/30M), N4GBK (30/20M), VA7GEM (40/30M), W5FER (40/30M), and WA3WZR (40/30M). The band breakdown by # of contacts and # of PODXS070 members contacted is as follows (Band/# contacts/# 070 members): 15M/15/1; 17M/30/6; 20M/71/21; 30M/28/14; 40M/20/13.
For those interested in a bit of the technical details, here's the info:

Stan and I would like to thank all who took time from their busy schedules to work us and to thank the PODXS officers/volunteers who create and administer the many fun operating events throughout the year. We thoroughly enjoyed the "APE" experience and would encourage anyone who is considering an "APE" for next year to go for it!
Pontoon boat shack in the lower right (covered in black plastic), one end of the multi-band dipole at the top of the picture, hex beam at 10 feet attached to kayak rack in the center, 6M double bay antenna attached to pole on dock behind hex beam, and 20M floating phased array on swim raft deployed at lower left.
20M Floating "Fazed" Array - Our homebrew 2-element phased array, switchable NE or SW, produced the bulk of the 20M contacts. Plans for next year are to grow it to 4 elements switchable in 4
directions.

August 23 - 24
K9H Sixth Annual APE
For the sixth year in a row Chuck (K9PLX, 070 #930) and Mitch (K9ZXO, 070 #967) headed for the wilds of Jacksonville IL (EM49ur) for an old homestead reunion and this year also for the celebration of Mother Hopper's 95th birthday. Mitch provided the rig, computer, interface and scope; Chuck provided the 4-band Hustler vertical and its tripod mount (thank you, York Radio Club of Elmhurst, IL!).
Setup went well (except for having to erect the antenna in the 95 degree heat and very high humidity) and we soon were on the air. Band conditions weren't great through late afternoon but they improved as evening came. By the end of the night Saturday we had logged 55 QSOs, including four which were 2nd contacts on different bands. We were glad to work some stations we have worked on previous APEs, including Joe, KA1PPV, for the 4th or 5th year in a row.
We worked 11 different DXCC entities (including the US) and 24 states. Our closest QSO was 249 miles and our farthest was 5,243 miles. Great fun again... look for us again next year!
Note: All QSOs have been uploaded to eqsl.cc; anyone wanting paper should QSL via K9PLX. Please include a SASE.

August 24, 2014 - IK1AMC
After an one hour trip through the hills of the Piedmont region, I arrived in the small town of Sale Langhe at 480 meters height above sea level .
This small town is located amid the beautiful hills of the Langhe area of Piedmont region in the North West of Italy.
The Langhe area is known for its cuisine, for its wine and truffles.
